Little-known ways to check heart attack risk

If you didn’t already know, February is indeed Heart Health Month. With fitness being central to our core, heart health is well...near and dear to our heart. We wanted to focus this post on one way that you can assess your potential risk for a heart attack, that you've probably never heard of.

Heart attacks happen to many people with no warning—which is why heart disease is called a ‘silent killer.” But it shouldn’t be that way. There are many tools and tests that can give insights into heart health if we put them to good use.

One example was just highlighted in a review of 52 studies that was published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. It’s called abdominal aortic calcification (AAC).

Researchers found that people who have AAC have a 2-4 times higher risk of a future cardiovascular event (like a heart attack).

That’s pretty significant. So why does this happen?

It’s because calcium can build up in the aorta before it builds up in the arteries of the heart. It’s an early red flag and a sign that you need to make some changes or take some preventive measures, like…

➔   Quitting smoking or drinking or anything that is sabotaging your body’s ability to recover

➔   Getting more exercise (wink, wink, nudge, nudge…..pssst…"hire a Coach”)

➔   Eating a healthier diet, based on your individual needs

➔   Taking appropriate supplements, based on the recommendations from your doctor (we highly recommend Dr. ACE at Regenerate Health Medical Center )

There are also other (little-used) ways to get clues about your risk for heart disease. Imaging of the abdominal aorta is not the only way.

Luckily, our go to medical expert, Dr. ACE from Regenerate Health Medical Center filled us in on some other advanced lab tests and markers that you can look at to help further evaluate your risk—like homocysteine, C-reactive protein, and sub-classes of the cholesterol markers. These can all be done through her office or any other highly trained Naturopathic Medical Doctor in your area.

Here’s the bottom line. The more information you have about your body and more specifically, your own physiology, the more power you have to make changes that will keep you healthy. Many tools that are available to us are not used as part of routine care.

Here at REGENERATE Strength, we believe that prevention is the best medicine. We also believe that commitment and personal responsibility will yield the best results. Which is why we continue to advocate for people to get a Coach that will help guide them where they want to go through consistent communication, competent programming (fitness, nutrition & lifestyle) and a caring nature.

You will get stronger, you will get healthier and your Coach can guide you there, but YOU have to do the work. Hire a Coach, keep your heart healthy and live a long and prosperous life.
